Fishing Sayner / Star Lake, Wisconsin
The villages of Sayner and Star Lake, in northern Wisconsin, are in the town of Plum Lake, often referred to as the “Heart of the Headwaters.”Hence our slogan: “Follow your heart to Sayner – Star Lake, where everything of beauty is better shared.”
The towns of Sayner and Star Lake are located at the headwaters of two drainage basins – the Manitowish River basin flowing to the west and the Wisconsin River basin flowing to the south – adding up to more than 7500 acres of water. Beneath the surface lie trophy muskies and bass, and abundant walleye, trout, northern crappies, perch, and bluegills. In addition to the area’s major lakes – Star, Irving, Ballard – there are also many excellent, smaller lakes hidden in the forests for fishermen to discover either on their own or with the help of a local guide.
A 5 lake, experimental project in the area provides year-round fishing, giving fishermen an early chance to limber up and test their equipment for the coming season. Nothing can compare to the experience of hooking a pre-spawn walleye in April!
Sayner/Star Lake also recently received a federal grant to extend its already-impressive system of bicycle trails, making it one of the top cycling destinations in the state. In winter, Sayner – the town where the snowmobile was first invented in 1924 – gives visitors access to a network of snowmobiling trails connecting dozens of communities in Wisconsin and neighboring states. Golfing, hunting, cross-country skiing, and hiking round out its year-round offerings of outdoor activities.
Whatever you come to Sayner/Star Lake for, you can find comfortable, affordable accommodations at area motels, lodges, rental cottages, and condos. Local restaurants and pubs offer drinks and hearty, traditional Northwoods fare, even late at night if you choose to stay out a bit longer on the waters or trails. The stores of Sayner/Star Lake have everything you need for your fishing trip, and also for the family.
