Leech Lake is located right in the heart of the Chippewa National Forest, where the dense woodlands and shimmering waters give fishing there a true wilderness feel. The irregular shoreline creates a number of bays of varying depths (Walker Bay being the deepest at 156 feet), providing a good range of structure for fishermen to explore, with Steamboat Bay having a particularly good reputation for producing pike. Renowned for walleyes, Leech Lake is also regularly stocked with pike, perch, crappies, blue gills, and panfish. Other nearby lakes offer comparably impressive numbers of all these species.
The many small lakes and rivers running through the forest provide the perfect environment for a canoeing adventure, with the chance to see eagles, loons, waterfowl and other wildlife up close and personal. When the snow starts following, Leech Lake becomes a mecca for snowmobilers, ice anglers, and cross-country skiers. The Deep Portage Conservation Reserve runs naturalist programs for those who’d like to learn a bit more about the wonders of these woods.
The town of Walker, which borders on Leech Lake, provides a variety of dining, shopping, and entertainment options: restaurants, boutiques, a water park, and golf courses, to name a few. The nearby Leech Lake Indian Reservation is the site of the Northern Lights Casino, and the Palace Casino in Cass Lake isn’t too far, either.
